Students Against Human Trafficking

The mission of Students Against Human Trafficking (SAHT) at Auburn is to engage students in the movement to eradicate human trafficking.

SAHT accomplishes its mission by hosting peer-to-peer training on the myths about human trafficking. The club also partners with direct-service providers to support victim recovery. Finally, students engage in advocacy efforts for necessary legislative change throughout the state of Alabama. ASAHT is continually looking to work with more students as peer-to-peer trainers and/or student-ambassadors. Opportunities for ongoing training by industry leaders are provided throughout the semester.

FAQ

How was SAHT founded?

SAHT was officially founded during Human Trafficking Awareness Month in January of 2021 by Auburn students Regan Moss and Courtney Furlong. Moss had been engaged with research focused on sexual commercial exploitation and Furlong had worked alongside victim/survivors in various nonprofits around the globe. Together, they founded SAHT as a research-based and survivor-informed organization to create change locally in Auburn and state-wide in Alabama.

What is SAHT's mission?

The mission of Students Against Human Trafficking is to engage students in the movement to eradicate human trafficking. Students have unique potential to create social and political changes, as seen all throughout history.

How does SAHT achieve its mission?

SAHT achieves its mission through several different ways, broadly in three sectors of peer-training, collaboration with and support to direct service providers, and advocacy work/policy change. Our peer-trainers give presentations about human trafficking, such as in our Myth Busters presentation. We collaborate with local and state agencies and organizations, such as the Auburn Police Department. We engage with successful policy makers in other states to develop necessary policies for Alabama.

What can Students do?

Students can be involved on many levels. Individuals can become a Peer Trainer, an Ambassador to local and state-based organizations, and/or engage with legislators during the legislative session. Students have the opportunity to learn from leaders in the many fields charged with the mission to eradicate human trafficking. Students can also attend various events, like survivor talks, and can partner with us through their other involvements. The opportunities are endless and we are always open to collaborations. Learn more about the team and how you can become involved with SAHT.
